The Elcontrol portable UV Source is a convenient means of testing any Ultra-Violet flame scanner utilising gas-discharge sensors operating at a wavelength of around 250nm. The unit is battery operated and housed in a rugged ABS plastic enclosure. The overall dimensions of the unit,including the integral carrying handle, mounting feet, and UV aperture are approximately 180mm long x 80mm wide x 115mm tall, and the weight is approximately 700gms..
The unit is operated by pushing the biased toggle switch on the unit to the 'ON' position. The UV lamp should strike in approximately 1-2 seconds.
NB. When the lamp in the UV source is cold it may take longer than normal to strike, but usually no more than 10 seconds. When fast operation is required, such as for the testing of burner control systems with limited flame establishment times, it is recommended that the UV source be operated for a few seconds prior to use, in order to warm up the UV lamp.
NOTE:Short-Wave UV Radiation is hazardous to the eyes, therefore the sources hould NOT be viewed directly.
Operation of the UV lamp may be determined by holding the window of the UV source up against a light coloured background, where a blue glow from the lamp may be observed.
The Nickel-Cadmium batteries in the UV source should typically give about 30 minutes of use before re-charging is necessary. The 'BATTERY STATE' indicator on the UV source is intended to give an approximate indication of when the batteries are in need of re-charging. Should the indicator illuminate while the UV source is in use, the unit should be re-charged as soon as is practical afterwards.
The UV source has a built-in charging circuit, requiring a DC supply of some 30 volts, at a current of approximately 25mA. A state of full charge should be achieved in some 12-14 hours. Care should be taken not to leave the unit connected to the charger for longer than is necessary, as damage to the batteries may result. However, for fully discharged batteries, up to three times the nominal charge time can be tolerated. Elcontrol produce a self-contained 240V AC charger for use with the UV source (a 110V version is available to special order). It is recommended that the UV source be kept in a state of full charge when not in use.
